Kitchen Islands and Waterfall Edges

The panel is mitered at the corner and the vein is matched across the joint, so the stone reads as one folded piece instead of two.

Islands and waterfalls

A waterfall is a fabrication problem, not a design choice

Anyone can stand a slab on its end. The part that separates a good waterfall from a bad one happens at the corner: the two pieces are mitered at forty five degrees and the vein has to line up across the joint so your eye reads it as a single piece of stone folding over the edge.

That is decided at the shop, on the slab, before anything is cut. It is also why we lay out the island on the actual material with you rather than working from a photo of the color.

Overhangs follow the two thirds rule: up to 12 inches of unsupported stone. Past that you need brackets, and they have to be installed before install day, because we are not going to set a slab on a counter that cannot carry it.

What the price covers

  • Layout on the actual slab so the vein lands where you want it
  • Mitered waterfall panels with the vein matched at the corner
  • Single level or raised bar top
  • Sink, cooktop and outlet cutouts
  • Overhang up to 12 inches without brackets
  • Seams color matched and filled with food safe epoxy
  • 1 year workmanship warranty on the install

Questions

Island questions

Will the vein actually line up at the corner?

On a mitered waterfall, yes, that is the whole point of the detail. We lay the panels out on the slab so the pattern continues through the joint. What nobody can do is make it line up on a slab that does not have enough length, which is why we do the layout before you commit to the material.

How big can the overhang be?

Up to 12 inches unsupported, following the two thirds rule. Anything longer needs brackets, and those go in before we arrive. We do not install overhang supports.

Can the island be a different stone than the perimeter?

Yes, and it is a common way to spend the budget where it shows. A dramatic slab on the island with a quieter material on the perimeter reads better than stretching one expensive stone across everything.

Do you build the island cabinet too?

We can. See cabinets and built-ins. If the cabinet is already there, it just needs to be level and secured before we template.
