Countertop Edge Profiles

The edge is the part of the countertop your hands touch every day. Four profiles come with the job. The rest are a choice.

Basic edges

Included in the price

These four are cut as part of every fabrication and installation. They are the profiles you see in most kitchens and bathrooms, and there is nothing second rate about them: a clean straight edge on a 3 cm slab is a serious looking countertop.

Straight
Round Top and Bottom
Quarter Round
Bevel

Premium edges

Usually an additional cost

More machine time and more hand polishing, which is where the extra cost comes from. The bullnose family is the most requested upgrade we do, especially in bathrooms and in houses with small children, because there is no hard corner anywhere on the edge.

Custom edges

Shaped profiles, quoted per job

These are the decorative profiles. They add real presence to an island or a bar top and they change the price, because each one is a different tool path and a lot more finishing by hand. We quote them on the job rather than from a list.

Custom edge profiles available
ProfileWhat it looks like
CoveSquare top with a concave curve scooped out underneath
OgeeThe classic S curve, convex into concave
Ogee BullAn ogee on top finishing into a rounded bottom
Cove DupontA straight drop with a stepped cove below it
Cove OgeeA cove stacked over an S curve
Flat OgeeFlat face on top, ogee sweeping into the bottom
WaterfallStacked rounded steps down the face of the edge

Come by the shop and run your hand along the physical samples before you decide. A profile that looks heavy on paper often feels right in person, and the opposite happens just as often.

Questions

Edge questions

Which edge profile is included in the price?

The four basic profiles are included in the fabrication and installation price: straight, round top and bottom, quarter round and bevel. Premium and custom profiles carry an additional cost because they take more time on the machine and more hand finishing.

Does the edge profile affect how the countertop wears?

Slightly. A square edge shows a chip more than a rounded one, and a heavy ogee has more surface to keep clean. In practice the difference is small. Choose the profile you like looking at.

Can different counters have different edges?

Yes, and it is a common choice. A simple edge on the perimeter with something heavier on the island gives you the detail where people actually stand, without paying for it across the whole kitchen.

Can I see the profiles in person?

Yes. We keep physical edge samples at the shop on Duncan Ave. Running your hand along a profile tells you more in three seconds than any drawing.
